“I think I have the same story as a lot of Black and Brown students.”

Dr. Krystal C. Johnson

#Shoutout to the first generation college students! This week, we are joined by Dr. Krystal Johnson, an educator and youth advocate with a background in higher education. Dr. Johnson shares why an interesting encounter with the financial aid advisor led her into education and influenced her to build a career that does justice to her community.

“Don’t stop yourself. Don’t stunt yourself. Don’t stop your shine.”

Living through Covid has impacted us all, and highlighted disparities and the brokenness across the country. Krystal speaks on the problems she’s observed within the state of education, specifically within the financial aid office in college. She talks about why she thinks there is a need for utilizing alternative plans to reduce the financial burden on students, asks what does a “gap year” mean in certain communities, and shares affirmations for college students and early career educators.
