Happy October!

From World Teachers’ Day to Halloween, Homecoming Celebrations and the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month there is a lot going on over these 31 days.

October reminds us of the power of coming home – to our purpose, our communities, and the shared commitment to education. As students settle into the school year, and college applications begin, we are sending love and power your way as you support families (and yourselves!) in navigating the changes coming to the education sector.

In spite of the challenges, we hope you are able to stay anchored to your why, and remember that you, your impact, and the students you serve, matter.

Black Nerds, Unite!!

This week, we are joined by Mr. Ashley Russell, Philosophy major turned IT Instructor and founder of AshTech Wisdom. As a Black man from the south side of Chicago, Ashley speaks about how he was shaped by his private school education, how his teachers kicked his butt into learning, and the pathway through college and careers that led him into the classroom.

“Our education is in our hands.”

The main carriers of the culture are the people we learn from, and for far too long, we’ve been prevented from passing on relevant information. Tune in as Ashley reflects on the challenges that exist within American education, the city of Chicago, and even within the Black community. Teaching the new generation, and showing young people a brand new world, is worth it.

Is it summer yeeetttttttttt???? 😮‍💨

This season has been heavy. From the news about ICE disrupting the lives of students and families in our city, to ongoing cuts in education funding, it’s easy to feel like we’re carrying more than our share. But through it all, we continue to show up—with love, creativity, and care—for our students and each other.

Take a moment this month to refill your own cup. It is spooky season so if you’re anything like me, curl up next your favorite blanket with your favorite snacks and watch some scary movies (that’s self care for me ).

Try Yoga @ the Lakefront and breathe in that crisp fall air. Try that pumpkin spice cookie you keep walking past at the grocery store. Go for a walk and watch the leaves change colors and remind yourself that transformation, though sometimes difficult, can be beautiful.

We see you. We honor your work. And we’re walking this path with you—one lesson, one deep breath, and one step at a time.
