Why Black Educators
Matter
Research shows that all students benefit from having Black teachers, yet less than 20% of the U.S. teacher workforce is Black.
Having Black educators in classrooms improves academic outcomes, cultural identity, and long-term success for all students—especially Black students.
Studies from Johns Hopkins and other institutions have shown that Black students who have at least one Black teacher are significantly more likely to graduate from high school and consider attending college.
Yet, only 2% of teachers in the U.S. are Black men, and less than 7% are Black women—highlighting a critical gap in representation and opportunity.
At Black Educators Matter, we’re working to change that by celebrating, supporting, and investing in the people who shape future generations.

Black Educators Matter: Project 500
We began with the goal of sharing the stories of 500 Black educators. A cultural bonus would be to help restore prestige to the profession, and increase the number of young professionals pursuing a career in education.
This series is a thought provoking, hilarious, vulnerable and empowering look into the chaos behind the classroom, the challenges of the industry, and the journey of an educator.
